The profile area Thermo-Fluids & Interfaces (TFI) represents a wide range of activities in the fields of fluid dynamics, combustion and heat and mass transfer. Our research creates the basis for the development of new energy and process engineering products and processes as well as more energy-efficient machines.
We promote fundamental and contractual research involving more than one institute. This is accomplished on the one hand by making known internally and to external partners the potential and capabilities available at the TU Darmstadt; on the other hand the TFI assists with necessary internal organisational and contractual measures to realise such projects.
Further to a strong program of fundamental research, the members of TFI maintain extensive contact with industrial partners and carry out application-orientated research projects.

Achieve leaps of enhancement by cleverly combining surface structure, wettability, external forces and fluid-to-surface motion, i.e. creating Smart Interfaces tailored individually towards specific applications.
We develop efficient and reliable methods to characterise equilibrium and dynamic contact angle phenomena. Our aim: to acquire a better understanding of the basic physical processes.
This Research Area focuses on the fundamental study of multiphase flows in the vicinity of interfaces.
A detailed understanding of reactive flows is crucial for control, prediction and optimization of physico-chemical conversion processes of raw materials.
This research area concerns aspects of flow design and control that are directly related to energy savings or increased efficiency and performance of fluid systems.
